to president obama the paper which outlined, in his mind, the way ahead in afghanistan. we responded in a conference in february of 2012. it is called something else now, but it was held in munich. hillary clinton gave back our assessment. there is a great deal of space between our assessments. one of them is not just a americans not seeing eye to eye with afghanistan. it is our way of talking about it. the picture we draw of pakistan is when they say, what is your end game? we talk about a strong central government in afghanistan. we talk about education, an army, 200,000 to 300,000 people. we have experts say, who will win? who are you picking? the way we look at it is not positivistic social science. it is anthropological. it is geographical. it is historical. this person hated that person's visions of the military. the senior general in the pakistani military told me, you americans think of your army and how sergeant gonzales from los angeles and the corporal from chicago and the major from new jersey all come into the military. you are all put into the military and it is a unifo

of different speech in him and president obama. both iran and obama believe in supporting the opposition. the administration -- but romney and obama believe in supporting the opposition. i think this administration has recognized that the most important thing we can do is create a unified political opposition so that the when the sovereign regime falls, we will have a transition as soon as possible. without a clear exit strategy, which by the way it romney said it is how he would think about military affairs, the president understands we need to keep all options on the table and be cautious about it. there are many ways to make the situation worse, rather than better. we want to get the diplomatic contacts read so that there can be a smooth transition while also -- diplomatic context so that there can be a switcsmooth transition. this administration has been at the forefront on putting pressures on the regime. i am not sure that romney will read position is that much different. >> i will open it up to questions from the press. >> one of the country that was mentioned was -- i guess the q

. under the leadership of president obama and the international community, the united nations has put them under some of the strongest sanctions today. oil exports have been correct. the iranian economy has been hit hard. it does have an effect on the economy. we must face the truth. sanctions have not stopped iran's nuclear program. according to the international atomic energy agency, during the last year alone, iran has doubled the number of energy uses in its underground nuclear facility. at this late hour, there is only one way to peacefully prevent iran from getting atomic bombs, and that is by placing a clear nucleare on iran's weapons program. discussed would offer opportunities for governor romney or president obama to score political points. and what that argument might sound like on these issues. is there any chance that either of them will try to do something like this? >> i think it would be a reference back. because the economy takes all the oxygen out of the election with a little bit of foreign affairs, the supreme court does not play against undecided voters. it is a motivator to get out and get to the polls. you want this person to replace justice ginsberg when she retires for example. you want to know if there's any practical experience, and the obama at the lustration has declined to defend the defense of marriage act. present romney might decide he would defend the constitutionality of that statute. it does seem like that has a lot of salience and presidential debates. i.t. think it will not happen. here is why. no major national political figure has attacked as publicly since 1996 or before. it is remarkable. the republicans were seeing some political profit in attacking affirmative action given the polls. th
